PROFILE

Jay J. Litman, AIA has long and outstanding professional reputation for creative, award-winning designs for new buildings as well as a deep understanding and appreciation for the rehabilitation and restoration of historic buildings. He has twenty-nine years of professional experience in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York. Jay received his bachelor's Degree in Architecture as well as a BFA in Fine Arts from the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design. He has had a long involvement on public planning and design review boards as well as membership on various State education and hospital boards. Jay is currently registered in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and holds a NCARB certificate. He has served as a visiting critic at RISD and taught as an Adjunct professor at Roger Williams University.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Litman Architecture - Principal 2006 -
    In the fall of 2006 Mr. Litman established a private practice specializing in design based solutions for a wide variety of project types including academic, urban planning, preservation, corporate branding, hospitality and the design of public libraries. Current projects range from urban infill and historic preservation in downtown providence, a new Gold's Gym, an Animal Hospital, expansion of a YWCA and various residential projects including renovations to a 400-year old house on the Herengracht in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

    Mr. Litman also serves as a Senior Planning Consultant and Architect for Fielding Nair International, a world renowned Educational Planning firm. Current projects include the development of a comprehensive educational master plan for Middletown Public Schools in Rhode Island and the planning and design of the Sinarmas World School, a 1,500 student private K-12 academy in Tangerang, Indonesia, which is currently under construction.
  • Newport Collaborative Architects - Senior Associate 1999-2006
    Mr. Litman worked for seven years at Newport Collaborative Architects (NCA) helping to establish their Providence Office in 1999 from a staff of three to twenty-one professionals. As Senior Associate he marketed, negotiated, designed and managed a wide variety of public, private, institutional and academic clients. Key NCA projects include the award winning Hotel Providence, Club Acela for Amtrak, Context Media, interior design of the Newport Public Library, "Treetops" residence, Temple Habonim, Webster Bank-Barrington and the new Jesse M. Smith Public Library.
  • Keyes Associates - Associate Director of Architecture 1995-1998
    Prior to Newport Collaborative Jay served as the Director of Architecture for the Rhode Island office of Keyes Associates, a multi-disciplined A/E practice, from 1995-98. In this role Mr. Litman re-established Keyes Architectual Division growing from a staff of one in 1995 to over twenty-five professionals by 1998. His responsibilities also included re-focusing the Marketing Department. While at Keyes Mr. Litman secured and designed projects for clients such as Amtrak, Met Life, CVS, the University of Rhode Island, Brown University as well as several large public school and public library projects. Notable projects while at Keyes include the Coastal Policy Institute at URI, the Warwick Public Library, HSR renovations at Providence Station for Amtrak, and the Benjamin Freeman Middle School.
  • Extrados Architects, Ltd. - Principal 1983-1995
    For twelve years prior to Keyes Jay Litman owned and managed Extrados Architects, Ltd., an architecture practice focusing on planning, historic rehabilitation, housing and public libraries. Over the years the firm grew to ten professional before merging with Keyes in 1995. Key projects include the Jamestown Library, Universal Press, Indian Village - 36 affordable townhouses. The Henry Drowne House, The Charles Looff Carousel restoration, and "Seaview", a large residence overlooking Narragansett Bay.
  • Prior Experience - Architectural Staff 1977-1982
    After receiving his professional degree Mr. Litman worked for Mitchell/Giurgola Architects in New York City, Graham Gund in Cambridge, MA and Earl Flansburgh and Graham/Meus in Boston, MA. Notable project experience includes the MIT East Campus Master Plan, The Heath Services & Technology Management complex at MIT, the Friuli Elementary School in Aviano, Italy, the Boston Museum School and the Emerson College Library and their Performing Arts School where Jay served as Project Architect.
