  • Overview
    Mr. Litman's areas of expertise include the planning and design of public schools and libraries; historic restoration and rehabilitation; institutional and town master planning, interior design, hospitality, laboratories, college and university buildings. His body of work includes the four-star Hotel Providence, Temple Habonim, a new prototype branch bank for Webster Bank, the "Club Acela" prototype for Amtrak, the restoration of the Levi Standish House for the SENE YMCA, the Coastal Policy Institute for URI and the Warwick Public Library. In addition, he has designed many award winning private residences. Over the years Jay has designed or planned over twelve public and college libraries and has been a featured lecturer at several Professional librarian (NELA) conferences.

  • Sinarmas World School, BSD/Tangerang, Indonesia (LA/FNI)2007-2009
    This project is being performed as Senior Planning Consultant and Architect with Fielding Nair International. In Tangerang, which is about one hour outside of Jakarta, we have developed a master plan for a 1,500 student K-12 private academy. Mr. Litman developed the final campus master plan and designed the Global Learning Center and the Health and Fitness complex. The GLC contains Administrative offices, an "Einstein" (Collaboration) Studio, the Cafe, the Performing Arts Center and the main campus Library. The H &F center contains the Gymnasium, various workout studios and locker rooms. Mr. Litman is the key client contact and has conducted coordination workshops with the design/client team in Jakarta.
  • The Hotel Providence,Providence, RI - Multiple Award Wining Project (EA & NCA)1994 - 2005
    New 80-room historic luxury hotel developed through the restoration and rehabilitation of two historic buildings combined with the design of several new commercial structures and the design of Robert E. Freeman Park. This project culminates an urban master plan developed by Mr. Litman 12-years ago. The Hotel is ranked 4-stars and contains several unique conference rooms, a 2,500 SF Ballroom, L'Epicureo Restaurant, a garden terrace, and a grand "metropolitan" lobby. The project received Historic Tax Credit Certification at the State and Federal levels. The Hotel opened on Valentines Day 2005.

  • The Jesse Smith Memorial Library,Burrillville, RI (NCA)2004 - 2008
    New 25,000 SF, 9.2 million dollar public library sited on the Clear River. Key design features include a barrel-vaulted, glulam timber-trussed main reading room and a children's library overlooking the River. The Library is the centerpiece of the Stillwater Redevelopment Plan, designed by the same project team. This plan calls for the environmental clean-up of the site, new roadways, outdoor public common space, new utility infrastructure, outdoor common areas and extensive landscaping. The Library is currently under construction.
  • Club Acela - Amtrak/ South Station, Boston MA (NCA)2000
    Prototype for first-class passenger lounge branded for the new "Acela" high speed northeast corridor rail service. The design scope included all interiors, furnishings and custom designed lighting.

  • Context Media,Providence, RI (NCA)2000 - 2001
    Design of office headquarters for a new E-commerce media company. The 2000 program included the reception area, conference facilities, administrative and sales offices, and media editing/production suites. An engineering design center was added in 2001.
  • Temple Habonim,Barrington, RI - Award Wining Project (NCA)2001 - 2003
    5,000 SF expansion and renovations of a Jewish Synagogue. The program included a new sanctuary, classrooms, expanded library and offices. Most notable was the custom designed acoustical cloud ceiling in the sanctuary developed as a series of rolling waves or unfurling scroll. The ceiling is also designed to be illuminated from within.

  • Newport Public Library,Newport, RI (NCA)2002
    Configuration and specification of library shelving and furnishings and the interior design of the new Children's Library including historic playhouses and a young reader's center.

  • Airport Gateway Master Plan,Warwick, RI (NCA)2001-2003
    Urban Master Plan for an Intermodal Transportation Center adjacent to Green Airport consisting of 1-million square feet of mixed use office space. The developer, Bullfinch Companies, was awarded 20-year development rights based on the initial master plan. Followup plans are contingent on the placement if the adjacent new commuter rail station and rental car garage over the Northeast Corridor ROW.
  • Anthony Village,Coventry, RI (NCA)2001-2005
    Redevelopment of historic Anthony Village as a new center for Coventry, RI. The centerpiece will be the planned restoration of an 1805 Mill Worker's House and the reconstruction of an 1810 Cotton Mill. The Mill is programmed to house several community and cultural functions and is integrated with a new waterside park. This work is in conjunction with the establishment of the Anthony Village Historic District, the largest contiguous area in Rhode Island ever to be nominated for National Register Status.
  • Webster Bank,Barrington, RI (NCA)2004
    New 3,500 square foot building designed as a prototype for a "Main Street" small town bank using "Smart Growth" design standards. The resulting building carefully adheres to the new "Town Center" zoning regulations, developed several years prior by an Ordinance Review Committee, then chaired by Mr. Litman.
  • Coastal Policy Institute - University of Rhode Island,South Kingstown, RI (KA)1997-2001
    The new 46,000 SF facility combines the economic analysis of ecological policy with the tools of GIS mapping, the laboratories of Natural Resource Sciences (NRS), a conference center and a Policy Simulation Laboratory into one Coastal Policy Institute. The building was conceptualized as a ship of sorts. The NRS laboratories were located with direct ground access to facilitate delivery of soil samples and animals to the laboratories. Since soil physics and other similar labs require natural light to properly view samples, a series of saw-tooth, clerestory sky lit labs were located outside the main body of the complex. The saw-tooth shapes echo the adjacent greenhouses while evoking the idea of ocean waves, the "surf" of the "surf and turf".
